Weekend Recap: Night of Fire and Thunder thrills at Bandimere

Weekend Recap: NAPA Auto Parts Night of Fire and Thunder

By Ronnie Kohrt

The NAPA Auto Parts Night of Fire and Thunder thrilled on Saturday night entertaining crowds with nitro-burning race cars and jet dragsters along with racing in several categories at Bandimere Speedway.

Bandimere Speedway's kick-off to the summer sent altered machines into the night burning nitro-methane on the Bandimere quarter-mile at over 250mph.

Lyle Greenberg laid down a tremendous run at over 240mph in the "Cone Hunter" that got the crowd to their feet and cheers all around. Playing host to the Midwest Fuel Altered Association, the nitro-burning machines dazzled the crowd all-night and sent flames into the sky replicated by nothing else. Overall, Lyle Greenberg, Sean Cash, Scott Gaulter, Neal Hinman, Jim Maroney, Keith Jackson, Johnny West and Keith Wilson put on a show at Thunder Mountain.

The NAPA Auto Parts Night of Fire and Thunder also featured the jet cars.

Some of the fastest jets in the region traveled to Bandimere and put on the track's very own light show on wheels, sending 5-second passes down the race track and 40-foot flames to wow the crowd.

Before the racing action hit the race track, Bandimere Speedway honored Vicky Johnson and the Johnson family during pre-race ceremonies for her efforts two-weeks ago when she pulled off the first perfect run in five years at Bandimere Speedway. Presenting her a specialized plaque and brand-new toolbox from NAPA Auto Parts was Will Rogers and Tony Ralston. Johnson also receives perfect-run bonus's from Bandimere Speedway partners Interstate Battery and Brakes Plus.

During pre-race ceremonies, Bandimere Speedway also honored Race to Read participants. Featuring over 30 schools and thousands of hours of reading, all Race to Read participants received specialized flags to wave representing their reading this year.

Right before musician Josh Mellin played a terrific rendition of the National Anthem on guitar, Jeff Alire and the Veteran Truck pulled out from underneath the Bandimere Speedway tower throwing out t-shirts and honoring our veterans in style.

As the racing action hit the quarter-mile, Bandimere Speedway saw intense and close racing in several of the sportsman categories including the Madcap Racing Engines Fast 16 where Bradley Johnson and Mark Faber reached the final. The Get Biofuel Quick 16 Final was to feature Valeen Jackson and Dennis Padilla and reaching the Fineline Series final was Josh Herman and A.J. Percival.

Adyson Vogel and Bradly Rainwater reached the final in the JR Race Car Titan 16 and Magnafuel Super Series finalists included Scott Burton and Mike St. Clair in Stock/Super Stock, Brandon Kleewein and Bill Percival in Super Comp, Kris Whitfield and Larry Hansen in Super Gas, John Crooks and Steven Mang in Super Rod and Darryl Bostwick and Brian Percival in Super Street. The Fastlane Stick Shift Shootout finalists were Jeremia Stanton and Larry Cleveland and in AFX Jason Kennedy and Trent Dinkel.

Bandimere Speedway wants to thank everyone for coming out and enjoying the races with us and we can't wait to see you next time at the dragstrip! The Trailer Source Thunder on the Mountain two-day Father's Day weekend event has tickets on sale now.
