Season Preview: Bracket racing invades Thunder Mountain

From the Tower: Bracket racers kick-off points season at Bandimere

By Ronnie Kohrt

Bandimere Speedway's 2021 season kicks-off on Friday and Saturday with the Kinsco Friday E.T. Series and the Saturday U.S. Recognition Series.

Racers run for points over a nine-race season that spans from April to September. Different classes highlight the speeds and styles of the race cars prepared by drivers and challenge racers in some of the most competitive atmospheres of drag racing.

All of the Friday Kinsco E.T. Series races and the Saturday U.S. Recognition E.T. races are open to spectators if you wish to check out the roots of drag racing and peruse the pits viewing all the beautiful race cars up close and personal.

Race cars hit the track starting at 4pm on Friday and 9am on Saturday and Sunday with great racing action going all day! The Bandimere concession stand will be open while the racing action is going and be sure to snag some new Bandimere t-shirts, jackets, hats and more from Competitive Threads.

Mike Dorn, 2020 Trophy/Jackpot Champion

Champions crowed in the Friday night Kinsco E.T. Series from 2020 include:

  • Jr Street - Caleb Dorn

  • High School - Colby Crooks

  • Trophy/Jackpot - Mike Dorn

  • Street Bike - Rick Rudd Jr.

  • Street ET - Max Sedbrook

The Kinsco Friday night E.T. Series highlights the vast variety of racing at Thunder Mountain. The youngest group racing on Friday night is the Corridor Collision Jr. Street program, which allows kids ages 13-16 to run full-sized vehicles at an 1/8 mile track with Mom/Dad as the passenger. The 2020 champion in this category was Caleb Dorn.

The next age group up is the High School category, a category that has run at Bandimere Speedway for many years. Last year's champion Colby Crooks took home not only the hardware in the High School season points, but also scored a Race of Champions win representing Team Bandimere at Topeka, Kansas during the Division 5 Summit E.T. Finals in 2020. It's one of the highest accomplishments a high school racer can win in the sport.

Along with the young racers of these categories, Bandimere gave out track championship distinctions in Trophy/Jackpot to Mike Dorn, in Street Bike to Rick Rudd Jr. and in Street E.T. to Max Sedbrook in a thrilling end of season final that went down to the final two rounds of racing of the season.

Kim Cramsey, 2020 Run Tuff Champion

In the Saturday U.S. Recognition E.T. Series, competitors race for the "Johnny," Bandimere Speedway's signature end of season trophy in multiple categories including Run Tuff, where Kim Cramsey captured the 2020 title in her 1964 Chevy II.

Racing in the Pro E.T. (non-electronics) and Super Pro (electronics) category, track champions Jack Brittingham Jr. and Bradley Johnson were crowned champs in 2020.

  • Run Tuff - Kim Cramsey

  • Pro ET - Jack Brittingham Jr.

  • Super Pro - Bradley Johnson

Bandimere Speedway also gives away an honor called the Chuck E. Silva Top Performer of the year award. This award is given to an individual who excels not only off the race track, but on it as well and carries the passion of the sport much like Chuck Silva did for so many years.

The 2020 Bandimere Speedway Chuck E. Silva Top Performer is a third-generation racer in their family and previously worked in the Bandimere Tech department for three years prior to becoming a Sheriff’s Deputy. Last year, Matt Crist was named the award recipient. A weekly bracket racer at Bandimere Speedway competing in several categories inside the Friday Kinsco E.T. Series and Saturday U.S. Recognition E.T. Series.

He was the champion of one series, tied for second in another class, and came in a close third place position in the Fall Series. Crist also finished in the top 13 of the other two classes he participated in. Crist accumulated an impressive 11 perfect lights and a grand total of 90 round wins throughout the 2020 season.
